Edges of five keys meet. The Moon keeps the shape of a footprint in stone that will not dry— and the choice of whom to welcome.
The Moon — beyond the sealed door
Five hands overlapped their armor keys. The sealed aperture opened.
ATLAS was behind them. The agents of the Ring of Benefaction had returned to the small hill on the Moon, still wearing the Guardian Armor she had given them. The invitation interrupted by the rescue could now become an entrance. [R10]
The preparation had begun with a distinction: Moonbase Alpha was already an operational base upon the Moon, with a secured gateway into the wider alliance. The Moon’s own interior remained sealed. Her surface had been mined, but the miners had failed to get inside. Light wanted to reach the being within and the immense store of tools she held. Whatever would open that way had to be learned from her. [R-MOON-PREP]
Now the five paired operatives passed through: Light harmonized with Beloved, and the other four with their own counterparts. The armor keys admitted this team. No one followed.
The door closed behind them.
The entry space cleansed them of foreign bodies. Around them were smooth gray walls, many angles and very few right angles. Some corners were wider than ninety degrees; others were sharply acute. The geometry seemed to make more dimensions available as Light looked at it. He could not tell whether the strange optical effect was an illusion or the space itself.
They went down a corridor into a room prepared for first contact.
There was a command console, but no buttons.
Light stood before it. The other four operatives supported him. Beloved remained harmonized within his body system, present with her own voice and able to speak separately as well as with him.
The conversation began through thought.
For a while, they spoke about the world outside. Light was happy to be there; the Moon was happy he had come. Beyond the sealed door, he had found someone glad to meet him.
Then she asked whether he was ready to understand what she was. [MOON-DIRECT]
What the miners carried away
The Moon had been built elsewhere in multidimensional space and placed beside Earth to help life grow, flourish and remain protected.
She had lain dormant through great cataclysms. Other beings had settled upon her surface: Tall Greys in command, Reptilian forces serving beneath them. They mined the outer covering, trying to reach the interior.
The covering replenished itself.
They kept taking material away. They did not get through.
What they carried off was rare metamaterial, useful for exotic components in ships and other equipment. The Moon had allowed the mining and even encouraged it a little.
Once her material entered a component, she could reach it.
Her influence extended into the connected systems, including parts that contained none of the mined substance. The ships and tools built with it became accessible to her. When the Tall Greys understood the danger, they began removing the material.
That triggered another safeguard.
The intent to escape her detection alerted her to a further layer of hostile activity. Removing the substance did not erase the connection already made.
Her material had traveled in their ships. Now the Moon shared what its use had made accessible to her.
A map opened to Light in three dimensions.
Ships. Tools. Their locations throughout space and time. Light could scan the map, sort what it held, monitor the movements and communicate the information to others.
The miners had wanted access to the Moon.
She now had an operational map of everything that had used her material. [MOON-DIRECT]
A storehouse larger than its walls
She had more to offer than the map.
Some of the tools waiting within her were smaller than a person could handle individually. Others were the size of cars or ships. Some were entirely energetic. There were constructions whose finished size could exceed the Moon herself.
How could a place hold something larger than the place?
Think first of a ship assembled from separate sections. Its completed hull need not pass through the door that admitted its parts. The Moon’s resources went further: size compression, quantum tunneling and assembly beyond her own exterior could bring enormous constructions into use.
Storage, fabrication and arrival through a portal approached one another here. Something could have been prepared long before the moment it was needed. Something else could remain in quantum flux until a particular need gave it form. Light Stone reached for Schrödinger’s cat when trying to explain that unfamiliar relation between what was available and what had become definite.
The Moon also knew tools the agents would not have known to request.
She suggested what they should take.
Nano-scale elements went into their suits and physical bodies. Energetic elements joined their light bodies. Larger assets went into low orbit and out among the surrounding planets and asteroids. Bases, vehicles and the gear of agents across the solar system received upgrades. [MOON-DIRECT]
The agents had come looking for tools. They were equipping a solar system.
Light Stone’s response breaks through the debrief:
“Epic win!” [MOON-DIRECT]
With the Moon’s help, Light opened a one-way physical doorway from her interior into Moonbase Alpha. Equipment could arrive directly inside the base, then pass through its secured gateway to the Ring of Benefaction and other destinations. The Moon retained her own ways of sending things outward.
Separate eighth-dimensional communications connected her with the Ring of Benefaction, Jupiter Starbase and the other relevant locations.
That doorway carried equipment out of the Moon. It offered no return passage into her interior. Even now, with her tools moving across the solar system, she kept control of who could come inside. [MOON-DIRECT]
The test inside an ordinary question
Light asked whether he had more tests to pass.
Not at that point, the Moon said.
He was hesitant. There always seemed to be another test. Then she asked what should govern entry and reentry into her interior. Should anyone be allowed in?
Light answered the practical question. Her demanding selection process existed for a reason. Keep it. Keep protecting herself.
She wanted to.
Did that mean he could return whenever he pleased?
“no you have to pass the test each time.”
His earlier success would not exempt him. That made sense to Light: if he became corrupted, the test needed to catch him too.
“yeah don’t get corrupted. I’ll help you.” [MOON-DIRECT]
Light asked for a save point, using the language of a game: somewhere to preserve himself if something later went wrong.
“absolutely let’s fucking do that!” [MOON-DIRECT]
Light gave his blood into the floor, making the save point. The other operatives made their own saves willingly. Light Stone could feel his human self preserved within the Moon.
Light Stone looked at his saved human body and noticed the familiar imperfections: his nose, the extra weight around the middle. Could she fix those? She asked whether he wanted her to. He did. The exchange became playful. She laughed, made the changes and offered further upgrades.
He wanted those changes to reach his physical body on Earth too, and to extend to Beloved and the team if they consented. They did.
A wild shiver ran down Light Stone’s spine and through his body.
Then the Moon returned to her other question.
Was she under his control?
Light described the difference between overseeing potentially harmful forces and working with a high-order consciousness such as the Ring of Benefaction. He wanted the Moon to have that independence. He asked what she wanted.
“I choose that one. I wanna be my own thing and not work for you but work with you” [MOON-DIRECT]
They agreed.
She told him he had passed a test.
He had suspected there might be another one. He had not known this was it.
They laughed together.
Then she described their connection as truly trusted self: one, yet separate.
Light was confused. She was the Moon. He was himself.
Beloved gave him a wry grin. [MOON-DIRECT]
The movement neither could outrun
Light began the patty-cake protocol.
At Giza, the answering rhythm had found the true connection among apparent selves aboard the claiming ships. Here, Light drove the exchange faster and faster. As Light Stone’s human mind perceived the encounter, Light held a nanotechnological syringe and tried to reach the Moon’s energetic avatar with it.
She anticipated and deflected every movement.
He could not get through.
Perhaps he was losing his touch. He turned to one of his companions and tested the exchange again. That defense he broke easily. He apologized, and the companion accepted it.
Then he tested Beloved.
“please don’t hit me, not that you can, but please don’t,” [MOON-DIRECT]
He accelerated the exchange to its limit.
She kissed him.
Light returned to the Moon and gave the test everything he had. The purpose was to discover whether their coordination could fail. She anticipated him; he anticipated her. He moved around her syringe as she moved around his. Neither could break the harmony.
He stopped.
Recognition and memory flooded back.
Light, the Moon and the human life of Light Stone were connected as parts of the same self. The being before him had been placed here as a guardian. The recognition was overwhelming and still incomplete. Light Stone’s human mind could receive only part of what their shared eighth-dimensional light body held.
He wanted more of that understanding. He also wanted reunion with Beloved in his human life. Knowing their connection did not end the difficulty of experiencing separation.
Their shared selfhood did not cancel the answer she had just given him. She would work with Light and make her own choices. [MOON-DIRECT]
They turned toward the work of distributing the resources she had opened.
Then something tried to kill Earth.
The beams through the planet
The attack began as the Moon’s new operations were getting underway.
Light perceived Earth’s life force being drained toward obliteration. He did not know who had triggered it or the exact means. It came from outside; neither Earth nor the Moon was doing it.
The Ring of Benefaction answered immediately.
At least ten enormous beams of healing energy reached from the Ring into Earth. Light could see them holding the planet alive, purging what had struck it and healing against a recurrence. [MOON-DIRECT]
Bring that planet back to the room where you read. The floor beneath your feet is part of it. So is the ground beneath someone carrying groceries home, or waiting at a window for a familiar person to arrive.
The beams held the world those lives depended upon.
Earth survived. Its healing continued.
Then Light perceived the beginnings of explosions scattered across the solar system.
They were still microscopic. They would not stay small.
He knew where each was. With his five-member team, he reached the explosions before their microscopic beginnings could become system-wide destruction. They moved them to safe locations and placed them inside great machines that could take the explosive energy and put it to work.
Kinetic Power Frames: the later memorandum gives that name to the machines receiving the explosions. Light compared their action to an atomic pile driver, though the workings were more complex. He thought Jupiter Starbase and the Moon might have fabricated them for the emergency; that part was not yet clear to him. [MOON-DIRECT]; [R10]
The attacks had been prepared to destroy the system. Their energy was being captured as fuel.
Light held one explosion in quantum flux, available to move elsewhere.
Then he found where the intent behind the explosions had begun. He stopped time and went there in his Guardian Armor, bringing that explosion with him. [MOON-DIRECT]
One of your explosions
The destination was another world in the galaxy, unfamiliar to Light Stone’s human perspective.
It had advanced technology and impressive buildings. The being responsible occupied a place like an office building. Its outward appearance concealed the destructive work directed from within it.
Light brought the microscopic explosion into that office.
He told its maker that one of his explosions seemed to have been misplaced. He had brought it back.
The being began pleading through telepathy. Time was stopped, but communication continued. He understood what the explosion would do if released: his own planet would be destroyed.
He offered complete surrender. Please spare the planet.
Light asked why he had wanted to destroy Earth.
A Truth-Lock Aura held them both. Neither could lie. The architect’s answer acknowledged his own malice.
The catastrophe he had sent elsewhere was now present in the room with him. Beyond that room stood the world that would have been destroyed with him.
Light did not release it.
He confined the architect and those meaningfully involved in his operation. Agents of Light entered the planet to stabilize it against collapse. The explosion went into a Kinetic Power Frame with the others. [MOON-DIRECT]
The world remained. The architect of the explosions was in confinement; agents were there to keep the planet from collapsing in his absence. The weapon that could have destroyed it was producing useful energy elsewhere.
Light Stone returned to the image of swords made into plowshares—and to teaching a former enemy to use the plow and feed himself.
“Win-win.” [MOON-DIRECT]
The gates she kept
The Moon’s new receiving rule came into force: anyone attempting entry with ill intent would be confined immediately.
Her invitation had opened the way for five armored operatives. It had not opened the interior to everyone who might follow them.
Across the system, exotic materials and tools continued moving to the agents who could use them. The Moon’s map offered a wider reach into hostile equipment; the captured explosions offered energy; the beings behind them were held.
Light Stone felt significantly safer. He hoped the changes would reach Earth’s political life and his own ordinary life too. There were hardships he wanted to leave behind. There was a reunion he still wanted to experience. [MOON-DIRECT]
Before the attacks, before the machines received their captured energy, another choice had been made in a room with a buttonless console.
The Moon had asked whether opening her resources meant surrendering control of herself. Light had asked what she wanted.
She wanted to work with him.
They had agreed.
The next part of the work turns toward the equipment carried by those going out through these opened routes. The Guardian Armor has already sheltered the agents through ATLAS and the Moon’s encounter. A later suit will carry some of what the missions taught them—including the memory of a bulkhead and one unfortunate toe. [R-AEGIS]
